Clovis was also the national co-chair of Donald Trump’s campaign in the 2016 presidential election. In January 2017, Clovis was sworn in as the senior White House adviser to the United States Department of Agriculture. Then, in September of 2017, Trump nominated Clovis as the Under Secretary of Agriculture for Research, Education, and Economics in the United States Department of Agriculture; a move that has to go to a senate committee vote.

Clovis has served in the Air Force for 25 years, from 1971 to 1996. He has held various roles with the Air Force including being a fighter pilot and an instructor. He has also served in the Pentagon and as a commander of the 70th Fighter Squadron. He then got promoted to the rank of colonel. When Clovis retired, he was the Inspector General of the North American Aerospace Defense Command and the United States Space Command.
After he retired, Clovis went into the private sector and worked one year for BETAC Corp. and three years for Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC). In 2000, Clovis made another change to his career by working at William Penn University in Oskaloosa. He left this position in 2003.
Then, in 2004, Clovis worked for the Homeland Security Institute (now known as the Homeland Security Studies and Analysis); he remained there until 2010. During his time with the Homeland Security Institute, he was also employed as a professor at Morningside College in Iowa, with a focus on business courses, management, and public policy.
In January 2010, Clovis took on another role, this time as a radio host; his show was called “Impact With Sam Clovis.” This happens to be the same time that Clovis started to get involved in politics. Clovis became an active Republican Party supporter and was a delegate to the state convention in 2010.
Fast forward two years, and in 2012, Clovis supported and campaigned with Rick Santorum, who went to eventually win the Iowa caucuses. At this time, Clovis was the chairman of the 4th District Republican convention, for the 2012 Republican National Convention.
In 2013, he took a leave from his work as a professor to start a political career. In 2015, he officially gave up his position at the university. He ran for a Senate seat in Iowa and finished second as a Republican candidate. Even though Clovis lost, he was selected as a Republican candidate for the Iowa state treasurer. Once again, he lost in the running for the Iowa treasurer.
In 2015, rather than running another campaign, Clovis worked for Rick Perry and his presidential campaign. Clovis only worked for Perry for a couple of months; he left to join Trump’s presidential campaign.
Clovis’s previous experience throughout his career came in handy while working for Trump because on many occasions, he was serving as a frequent spokesperson for Trump’s campaign. This then led the pathway for Trump to name Clovis as the Senior White House adviser to the United States Department of Agriculture when Trump officially won the election race.
#6. Sam Clovis Nomination for Secretary of Agriculture for Research, Education & Economics
Trump needs to fill the position of Under Secretary of Agriculture for Research, Education, and Economics and nominated Clovis for the position in September 2017. Trump’s move received attention from many individuals because the past the position has traditionally been filled by a scientist. Clovis has no such experience or background.
The position would require Clovis to work alongside scientists and agencies in and out of the government. Not having the background or experience could be a challenge when it comes to completing the necessary tasks handled on a daily basis.

Trump’s choice brings more concerns than appreciation for Clovis. The reason being that without a science background, he may not care or understand the real issues at hand. For example, there could be less attention to the effects of climate change on wheat and other crops grown. Also, there would have to be studies completed on how crops react to various pests and diseases that emerge. In today’s day and age, there seem to be diseases popping up all around the world due to globalization, and something would need to be done immediately.
By lacking the experience, Clovis would need more time and resources needed to fix any issues that arise. Also, Clovis is a skeptic of climate change, which doesn’t add much benefit to his resume. There has been a petition, which has been signed by thousands of scientists and researchers, that urges the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry not to approve Clovis’s nomination.
The choice of nominating a non-scientist is a shift from the past administrations in the White House. By nominating Clovis, Trump is showing the public that he does things his way. The position will have to be confirmed by the Senate before officially being sworn in. In his state of Iowa, Clovis is building a following from farmers to take on the position as the undersecretary.

Ever since Donald Trump won the vote of the American people, there has been one rumor floating around, which is that there was interference from the Russian government in the 2016 elections. Currently, there is a team in place looking into the matter, referred to as the Special Counsel Investigation of Russian Interference in the 2016 United States elections. It is being run by former FBI director, Robert Mueller.
As Mueller and his team continue to investigate, more information is being released to the public. In one case, George Papadopoulos pleaded guilty for making false statements to the FBI investigators about his contacts with foreigners claiming to have Russian connections. Papadopoulos is the former foreign policy advisor to the Trump’s presidential campaign.
The reason why this is important is because Clovis was supposedly well aware of what was occurring with Russian officials and Papadopoulos. In August of 2016, Clovis allegedly encouraged Papadopoulos to organize an off-the-record meeting with Russian officials. The communication with Clovis and Papadopoulos supposedly went back and forth regarding Russian officials.
It is likely that Clovis will face questions about his interactions and conversations with Papadopoulos. This could result in a couple of things. If Clovis is found innocent, then it could be business as usual. He could proceed with his Senate hearing regarding his nomination for the role of Under Secretary.
Another possibility is that if there were any wrongdoing on Clovis’s part, his nomination may not even be concerned. He could lose his current position as senior White House advisor. This would result in Trump finding someone else to nominate as the Under Secretary and have another senior advisor by his side.

The timing of Clovis’s nomination is very unusual. Clovis is taking on a higher role as one of Trump’s campaign members is being charged. To make matters worse, Clovis doesn’t have the right background for the position, so why make a nomination in the first place? If Trump was the final decisionmaker in the matter, that’s one aspect not to worry about. However, the final vote is decided by the Senate committee. This gives pretty much gives no power to Trump regarding who takes the position at the end of the day.
Trump may be taking this action to create more noise in the public’s eye and protect the people that helped him get elected as president. Also, one possibility is that Trump chose Clovis as the Under Secretary because Clovis may have agreed to do what Trump wants him to do.
