Fusion GPS Co-Founder Glenn Simpson and the Russia Dossier Could Put Russiagate to Rest

Private investigation firm Fusion GPS’s co-founder, Glenn Simpson, will speak about the Russia dossier before a House Intelligence Committee next week. This could be one of the most significant chapters of the Russiagate debacle that has fueled doubts about the legitimacy of Donald Trump’s presidential win a year ago. This may have been the goal all along, of course.

It has been unclear who hired Glenn Simpson and GPS Fusion. But many have learned by now that they compiled the infamous dossier about Donald Trump allegedly hiring two women in Moscow to urinate on a hotel bed where President Barack Obama and wife Michelle once slept. Simpson may be doing this to avoid getting himself mixed up in a potential subpoena fight, opening the path to more legal troubles.

Simpson’s revelations could serve as the proverbial pin that bursts the Russiagate bubble. Even if it fails to blow the Russia narrative completely to bits, Simpson’s hearing may also betray the Democrats’ weakness. The Democrats have failed to present a credible narrative about Russia’s alleged efforts to influence the outcome of the 2016 presidential election—in Trump’s favor.

Fusion GPS Had Resisted Talking About the Russia Dossier

Until recently, Fusion GPS had resisted congressional efforts to uncover the facts behind the so-called “pee-pee” dossier. Nobody has verified the details of the alleged “golden shower,” after all. But, legal teams did what they do. They must have offered Glenn Simpson sufficient assurances that he and his sources and clients would remain protected. In other words, Simpson has been given as adequate as possible a venue in which to uncover details that could hurt Trump. That is if the original allegations are based on fact. If they’re not, they will hurt the Democrats and the Russiagate construct much more.

Russiagate has produced a lot of really dense smoke. But there’s no roast and it’s time to turn on the fan, because it’s made the atmosphere in Washington toxic. The Democrats may soon learn just how toxic; Russiagate may be about to recoil on the very people that fired the shots about Russians putting Trump in the Oval Office. The key to unraveling Russiagate might be Hillary Clinton’s campaign lawyer, Marc Elias.

It’s alleged that he hired Fusion GPS on behalf of Clinton’s campaign team and the Democratic National Committee (DNC). Ken Vogel of The New York Times—one of the main media outlets pushing the “Putin made us vote for Trump” construct—stated that Elias “vigorously” denied having had anything to do with it. (Source: “Clinton Campaign and Democratic Party Helped Pay for Russia Trump Dossier,” The New York Times, October 24, 2017.)

The Democrats and the entire Clinton campaign team have already had to answer delicate questions. One of the most famous involves journalist and former deputy-chair of the DNC, Donna Brazile. She was accused to have passed along questions and hints to Clinton ahead of the former First Lady’s debates with Bernie Sanders. When Brazile acted as CNN contributor, she had been accused of giving Clinton the same “preparatory” support to favor Clinton in her debates against Trump.

Glenn Simpson and Donna Brazile to Deliver a One-Two Punch Against Russiagate

Donna Brazile has published a book, which could break sales records. It’s called Hacks: The Inside Story of the Break-ins and Breakdowns That Put Donald Trump in the White House and has sold out on Amazon. The book apparently reveals, if nothing else, that the Democrats and Clinton’s handling of her presidential campaign are to blame for her loss; the Russians, not so much.

Brian Fallon, who served as a Clinton campaign spokesperson, hinted that Clinton might know much more than she has suggested about the Fusion GPS research project and Glenn Simpson. It’s known that Fusion GPS hired former British MI6 Moscow Bureau chief Christopher Steele to compile it based on foreign sources, some of them living in Russia. (Source: “Former Clinton Spokesman Brian Fallon Calls Trump Dossier ‘Money Well Spent’,” Breitbart, October 25, 2017.)

There is an old Hungarian saying about the glass that keeps going down the well until it breaks. It’s a variation of the way most people use the saying “curiosity killed the cat,” which actually ends with “but satisfaction brought it back.” Rather than Budapest, however, this saying applies very well to Washington now. The Russiagate story has taken on a life of its own.

The traditional political players and media can’t let it go and it’s going to choke them, just as a buffet brunch might choke a gluttonous child overwhelmed by the possibilities. Indeed, Trump won the presidency on November 8, 2016. On November 9, 2016, Hillary Clinton conceded. But there are credible rumors that the “blame Russia” campaign or Russiagate was concocted within 24 hours of Trump’s win. (Source: “Is Russiagate Really Hillarygate?,” Zero Hedge, July 16, 2017.)

Boris and Natasha of Rocky and Bullwinkle fame could not have come up with a better plan. The goal was, and is, to connect Trump’s win to a Russian strategy to affect the outcome of the American elections. The Democrats—and many Republicans—would have little choice but to move for impeachment hearings against Trump. Nine months before being compelled to resign over the Watergate scandal, Richard Nixon told Americans “I am not a crook.” The Democrats are hoping, perhaps, to get Trump to deliver a similar line. Perhaps it might be “I am not a Russian.” Yet, how likely is it that Americans will endure another spectacle of a President ignominiously leaving the White House?

Therefore, it seems that even The New York Times has started to grow fed up by the whole sordid mess, even as it’s becoming apparent that the Democrats have been lying about their own involvement in the case.
