Marco Rubio is the Junior United States Senator representing Florida. His career started while studying at the University of Miami School of Law to obtain his law degree. At the time, he was interning for Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, who was a U.S. Representative under the Republican Party.
This then led to Rubio working for Republican Senator Bob Doyle for his 1996 presidential campaign, which is also the year Rubio completed his law degree. Two years after completing his law school degree, Rubio was elected to a seat as City Commissioner for West Miami.
In 1999, there was a special election held for the 111th House District in the Florida House of Representatives, representing Miami; which is an election that occurred for a vacant seat before the general election took place. The seat was previously held by Carlos Valdes who was a Republican representative and no longer had the role.
Rubio took on the challenge to win the seat. The focus of his campaign was early childhood education and cutting taxes. He placed second in the Republican primary but ended up winning the runoff election for the Republican nomination. He then defeated Democrat Anastasia Garcia in the special election to win the seat.
The victory of the special elections was just the beginning. He was re-elected to the seat in 2000, 2002, 2004, and 2006; working a total of four terms. In 2006, Rubio made history by becoming the first Cuban American to be the speaker of the Florida House of Representatives. He remained to be the speaker until the end of 2008.
In 2009, Rubio ran for the Senate seat, a campaign in which he was considered the underdog. He ended up winning the Senate seat. Since the victory, he has become a member of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation and the Committee on Foreign Relations.
Not quite done with reaching new levels in April 2015, Rubio announced he was planning to run for the 2016 presidential nominee under the Republican party. In the end, Donald Trump won the seat for representing the Republican Party in the White House.
After the defeat, Rubio wanted to take a break from politics. However, he changed his mind and decided to run for re-election for a second term as senator and won. There is a possibility that Rubio forms another campaign for the run for the White House.
#5. Marco Rubio Controversy
Even though Rubio is a family man and works to fight for the people, he doesn’t have a clean record in the public’s eye.
In 2006, it was reported that Rubio was barely staying afloat with his own financials. Normally, this is not a big deal, but since Rubio is a politician and making decisions for other people, it is concerning.
During Rubio’s run for Senate, he was making personal purchases on his Republican Party of Florida American Express. There were transactions such as vacations, haircuts, groceries and liquor purchases. The Republication party did look into the manner and saw that Rubio did end up paying for the expenses in the following month.
Rubio said that he mistakenly charged the incorrect credit card.
The day before Rubio announced he was running for President, he cashed out $68,000 from his retirement savings accounts. He used the funds to purchase a new refrigerator and a new air conditioner. (Source: “Oh No! Needing a Fridge, Rubio Raids Retirement Account,” Time Inc., May 18, 2015.)
This move brought controversy because it cost Rubio more than $20,000 in a tax bill. This shows that decisions are not made logically and are in the spur of the moment. Also Rubio has made many investments by closing deals on house purchases with zero down payments. This is why the most recent financial crisis occurred.
All this is do to Rubio living above his means and spending more than what is being brought in. One example of how Rubio spends his money recklessly, is when he received an $800,000 advance on a book deal. Rather than uses the funds to pay off his debts, he used the money to purchase a speedboat and luxury car.
The simple thing of Marco Rubio car’s spending could be looked at by voters, negatively. It could be said all this from his past has come back around and affected Rubio’s future because it reflects that he makes reckless decisions. Since he needs to make decisions about the future of the people would not putting their vote of confidence behind Rubio.
One example that could have landed him in the White House was back in 2011. Mitt Romney was running for a presidential candidate under the Republican Party and was going to ask Rubio to be his running mate for Vice President. However when Romney and his team looked into Rubio the decision was to look else where for a vice President running mate based on his previous decides.
It could be said that when Rubio went out on his own for running for President his previous problems could have turned voters to look at other candidates. Since Rubio is not in the White House it could be one the reason for Trump winning the Republican Parties support and than becoming President.
#6. Marco Rubio has a Net Worth of -$175,996
Marco Rubio has to release all his financial information annually to the senate committee that looks after conflict of interests and ethics. This is to ensure that the Marco Rubio is not making decisions for her own personal financial gains.
In 2017 it is estimated that Rubio has a net worth of -$175,996. The reason for having a net worth in the red is because he has more liabilities than assets. For example, there are two mortgages held which are valued at more than $350,000 and an additional $100,000 in a line of credit.
